Basic Facts Procedures
Primary- I can't stress enough how useful the power of ten cards and the games that go with it are. Students recognise the shapes that create the number.
I usually go in the following order:
-recognise 1-5 playing fish and concentration
-recognise 1-10 playing fish, concentration and face off
-recognise friendly numbers- playing fish, concentration using friendly numbers
- play and master +10 in power of ten
-play and master +9 with power of 9
-play and master +8 with power of 8
-play and master +5 with power of 5
- then -10, -9, -8,-5
Intermediate- I check on their knowledge of basic addition facts and go back through them as needed then move onto multiplication and division
- I like to use the stories in TImes Table the Fun Way. Each fact has a memorable story or' strategy' to help the students remember each fact.
- play bump games, shut the box and flash cards to improve practice.
