Weekly Graph- procedures
1. I start with this task first at the beginning of the year.
2. I ask students what their favourite colour is as they come in the door.
3. I use the business card magnets -write their names in their favourite colour and place it on the bar graph.
4. I use an overhead (or Elmo) to draw and complete the graph in a whole group direct instruction lesson. I go one step at a time, labelling, counting filling in, circulating and giving students feedback as we go.
5. On day two we ask a new question, we decide on the choices and label the graph on the board, students come up and place their names in the appropriate column.
6. I do another whole group instruction using the overhead and circulate with students doing their own graph.
7. We create a chart of expectations to define: -Why do we do this activity ( relevance to real world)
- sense of urgency- my time, my work, my development as a mathematician
- what supplies are needed to be prepared to do the activity independently
- what it looks, and sounds like
- what to do when you are stuck
- criteria
