Sharing in a Foundations 12 class
Caroline Chupa shared her team taught lesson with Tyler Allison. Tyler works with the schools LSU students. Both teachers had been working on sorting sets of objects at different levels. The task was for the two classes to sort and make a Zoo. The LSU students chose the sorts with guidance from the grade 12's . THe grad 12's had to take notes and use set notation to describe the sorts. What was amazing was how the groups supported each other. Words were chosen effectively. It was wonderful to watch
Grade 8 sharing at PSO
Gillian Bouska shared in her grade 8 class today. Her students were broken into three groups one with her working on multiplying fractions, a second on the computer and the third working on relevant paper work. Students seemed to appreciate the time with the teacher and having a chance to practice what she taught. At the end of the class, there was an added bonus! Students had to write any new learning into their math journals. This was her way to check in and see how students were able to explain their thinking and understanding.

8 Teachers representing all our high schools came to watch a bisecting angle lesson outside in the snow. Thanks to Kim Zalay for sharing her outdoor Ed class with us.
South End High School Sharing- spring 2015
6 teachers traveled to the south end to watch two teachers team teach a grade 10 math class. They had set up 3 rotations for their students: Khan Academy app on ipads, a lesson on the y intercept and slope and a paper work reviewing previous lessons. We noticed how engaged the students were, how the teaching of the small group helped the teachers give specific feedback and how the variety of 3x 20 minute sessions worked for everyone.
First High School sharing in Mrs. Riplingers grade 8 class
In her 80 min block rotation she has three groups. The first 10 minutes are spent collecting and confirming what students are to do. Students rotate through: 1- a lesson with her 2- a hands on project or game and 3- assignments in the text book. She creates the three groups using a pre-assessment which has questions on a concept scaffolded from easy to hard.
High School Meeting- September 2014
Nara, Mark and I met for coffee to discuss possibilities at the high school level. They shared many thoughts and issues of need. The main areas are;
1. Assessment for learning- discussions need to happen to clearly understand how to assess students so that it can inform teachers what they need to teach. Have workshops for high school teachers in this area.
2. Finding engaging activities that excites students about math and helps them out of their fears.
3. Improving mental math skills
4. Looking at what are the essentials that kids need? Create a scope and sequence of concepts listed in order to show building blocks of learning.
5. Noticing difficulties students face with some of the ways the courses are set up. Grade 8 & 9 supplements and support for success in math 10. Math 10 needs to prepare more for pre- calc 11 rather than test preparation.
Both Nara and Mark then attended a pod meeting in Big lake and observed guided math in action. We all see that there is a possibility to do the same meeting format around assessment and engaging activities at the high school level.
