Teaching the Open number Line at the Table
We observed a well organized lesson in a French Immersion grade 3/4 class. The teacher ( Natalie Easthope) was using the open number line concept with her class. They were fixated on the size of the jumps, and asking for a ruler. She used cuisenaire rods to help get them away from it. See the pictures and video below. She warmed up the group by playing guess my number. Students paired up and chose a rod for each other, placed it in their partners hand with out them seeing it and each had to guess the number (size or colour) of the rod. This helped them get familiar before exploring with them on the open number line.
Teaching Guided Math at the Table
Teachers bring students to the table to teach math in guided small groups.
The groups are chosen and formed using small math 'check's' which identify common misconceptions around one concept.
It is important to allow students to discover their own and each others mistakes when teaching at the table.
Ask questions rather than tell and teach- Are you right? Is s/he right? How do you know?

Seat Work
As a follow up to the table lesson, teachers send students off with paper work that is relevant to the lesson.
It is another activity for students to be doing and also gives them a chance to follow up on the lesson and show independence on the task.
Teachers use a variety of sources and ideas from Math to the Max, Jump Math and calendar work. .
