Today we met and also invited two high school teachers to watch Lacey Venner's grade 5/6 french immersion class. The high school teachers were looking for ways to group and teach at their level. Ms. Venner's students demonstrated their cooperative abilities in problem solving, games and individualized paper work.
Today we had the opportunity to watch Carolyn Cushing demonstrate in her k/1 class. She was using an engaging class management technique called Whole Brain Teaching. Students shared and engaged in their learning as they played bump, addition war and worked on their calendar. Carolyn worked with a small group at the table working on number stories. In our debriefing we worked on creating a small math check about placing numbers on the number line. Each of us looked at the math profile assessment tool for examples of that type of question. We then each created 3 similar questions. We then sorted the questions in range of difficulty. Below are the sorted pictures. We just finished sharing at Chilcotin Road where we watched Frances Bisaro demonstrate in her grade 1 classroom. Students were soooo engaged n the number stories lesson. One student wrote (4x5)+2=22. She sent students off to work in small groups, identifying 'experts' for the new Weekly Graph activity so that students knew who to seek out if they were unsure of what to do. As we watched at the table, observing her small lesson we saw very eager mathematicians engaged and thinking how to use the power of 10 strategy (10+3=13) to help understand +9.
